At US telco provider Verizon, the future of work is all about Flexible Office Solutions – or FOS. Whereas flexible workspace (also known as flexspace) was once seen as the preserve of startups, factors like cloud computing and employee demand have led corporates to cash in on the benefits of flexible working too. For Verizon, this means teaming up with Regus in the US.

The partnership involves kitting out existing Regus locations with dedicated Verizon-only spaces that teams access using a key card. Once inside, an exclusive bank of hot desks is ready and waiting for Verizon employees to plug in and get online via super-fast Wi-Fi buzzing throughout each building (and, at the end of the working day, personal items like laptops, chargers and a folder or two can be stored in onsite lockers overnight).

This arrangement ensures that work security is guaranteed. But it also allows Verizon’s employees access to a dynamic shared environment, which boasts a business lounge, café, and copy room with multifunctional printers. Meeting rooms are available to book (simply download the My Regus app), and guests are guaranteed a friendly welcome thanks to the professionally staffed Regus reception. Employees who find themselves away from the home office and out and about at a client meeting, for example, can utilise any downtime via the Regus Enterprise app, which identifies nearby Regus Business Centres they are welcome to drop into. With over 1,000 across the US, chances are there’ll always be somewhere to in the neighbourhood. It’s all part of the drive towards the idea of “collaboration and community” that’s reinventing the world of work right now – and it’s having a dramatic impact on workplace trends

Verizon has clearly been listening: the thinking behind its FOS initiative is to provide the tools that empower work. High on the agenda for employees are flexible office space and internet connectivity that allows them to work in bright, dynamic, stimulating environments and from a choice of locations. And as the work/life balance becomes increasingly important among the millennial workforce (the largest cohort), FOS looks like a smart move – for everyone.

What it means is an easier way to do business. For the company, the introduction of client-specific spaces has put paid to any security concerns, and new International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) accounting rules that make leasing FOS more attractive than a fixed office have also helped to encourage adoption. For the employee, there’s the option of often working closer to home while retaining all the benefits of a traditional office – and the buzz of mingling with like-minded individuals from other organisations too. It’s another example of how the flexible future is also a fully customisable one – for the one-man band, the plucky startup and the world-leading multinational alike.
