With so much uncertainty in the world of work, it’s hard to see a way out if you feel stuck in the wrong job. According to entrepreneur Charlie Hoehn, there’s a strategy to building a career worth having.
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus famously proclaimed that “the only constant in life is change”, a statement never truer when applied to the current work landscape.
As global economies fluctuate with relative uncertainty, it seems the days of a “job for life” with an exceptional pension at the end of 40 years’ service are a distant memory. But is this really such a bad thing?
In the last few decades, the way we work has changed dramatically. Thanks to cloud computing, ubiquitous Wi-Fi and smart phones, employees can work from from any location, at any time.
Flexible work patterns benefit both companies and their employees, who can scale business requirements or manage workloads in response to real-time needs. It’s through this innovation in the workplace that people have found different ways of working smarter. Embracing this movement is American author, entrepreneur and public speaker, Charlie Hoehn.
Hoehn graduated from Colorado State University in 2008, in the midst of the financial crisis. He spent three months applying for jobs and traineeships but, despite having outstanding grades and substantial work experience, couldn’t get in front of a single employer. Instead of admitting defeat and lowering his career goals, Hoehn set about finding work in a different way.
His journey forms the basis of his TEDx talk, “A New Way to Work”, which centres on changing your mindset around how the world works. He advises thinking carefully about the sectors in which you want to work, finding something that you are passionate about and setting about acquiring the skills that will make you indispensable. Become your own boss, he says, and be proactive in finding the work you want, even if you initially have to offer your time for free.
The three main take-aways from Hoehn’s talk are: do what you love, educate yourself in specialist, in-demand skills in your industry of choice, and make your own rules. According to Hoehn, this approach is a sure-fire way to land a career that you love.
